Masks let you define a specific area in a clip that you want to blur, cover, highlight, apply effects, or whatever. You can apply effects either inside or outside the masked area. One of the common uses for masking is to blur a person's face to protect their identity, or a license plate on a car. For example, you can mask a person's face by applying a blur effect or a mosaic effect. A matte, on the other hand, is a different clip who's luminence or alpha affect the clip. So for masks, we work on just one layer, and for mattes, we need two. Let's see how that works. Open Premiere Pro and start a new project (File > New > Project). And import the Truck Clip.mov file (File > Import). If you’d rather, you can use your own clip. In the Project panel, right-click the Truck Clip asset and select New Sequence From Clip. Switch to the Graphics workspace (Window > Workspaces > Graphics). Select the Type Tool and type your title text in the Program monitor. Scrub over the Scale setting and enlarge the text in the Essential Graphics panel to 200%. Switch back to the Editing workspace (Window > Workspaces > Editing). Move the title graphic up to V3 (Option + up arrow) and extend the clip to match the length of the Truck Clip. Drag a duplicate Truck Clip (Option + drag) to V2. Trim the Truck Clip (V1) by dragging the left edge to about the 8-second mark. Open the Effects panel and look for the Track Matte Key. The background video will appear where your text was. Right-click the left edge of the lower Truck Clip (V1) and select Apply Default Transitions to add a fade-in effect.
